OPD has new assistant chief; 28-year veteran is the first female to hold the position in Ogden
By Jessica Miller, Standard-Examiner staff
OGDEN -- The Ogden Police Department has a new assistant chief.
Marcy Korgenski, a 28-year OPD veteran and most recently a lieutenant over training, was promoted to assistant chief last week.
Chief Jon Greiner said the promotion came after Assistant Chief Randy Watt was granted another year of military leave.
"We have an assistant chief on military leave," Greiner said. "He got extended another year, so rather than try to run the department short, the mayor decided to fill the position."
Greiner said assistant police chief is an at-will position, meaning the mayor makes the decision of how many assistant chiefs there are and whether a new one can be hired.
"If we end up with three assistant chiefs a year from now, then we end up with three assistant chiefs," Greiner said.
Korgenski is the city's first female assistant chief and was also the first female police lieutenant.
Greiner said Assistant Chief Wayne Tarwater will move to supervise the uniform division, and Korgenski will take over Tarwater's current responsibilities over support services.
"The police department is in two divisions: uniform and support services," Korgenski explained. "Uniform services is all of the officers who wear uniforms and drive marked cars. Support services will be the position that incorporates all those who don't wear uniforms -- detectives, investigators, community policing, strike force -- all those areas."
When Watt returns next year, the assistant chief responsibilities will be split three ways, Greiner said.
"This has happened before when (Watt) got activated in 2002," he said. "We reorganized to account for that."
After former Assistant Chief Steve Turner retired in January 2003, the department returned to having only two assistant chiefs.
Korgenski said she's excited to take the new position, and hopes to make both the police department and the city proud.
"It's very exciting," she said. "Also, it'll be a terrific challenge. I will certainly strive to do the best job I can."
Greiner said assignment changes for the department's eight lieutenant positions will occur in the next few weeks, as Korgenski's position is filled and a normal rotation that occurs every few years takes place.
